MOUSEKATEERS MOUSERY

A Mouse Show is judged similarly to a cat show.

Mice are separated into varieties which includes:-   Standard (shorthaired),   Longcoat,   Rex (curly),   Longcoat Rex,    Hairless,   and the tailless   Manx Standard,   Manx Longcoat,   Manx Rex,   Manx Longcoat Rex. 

These Varieties are then subdivided into Categories dependent upon coat colours :- 

Self -all the one colour 

Fox/Tan - solid top colour with white/tan belly

Marked - brindle, broken marked, even marked, banded, dutch, rumpwhite etc

Shaded - siamese, reverse siamese, burmese, himalayan, sable

Ticked - agouti, chinchilla, cinnamon.

Points are awarded for colour and markings, temperament, variety, condition, head, eyes, ears, and tail.  The mouse with the highest points is judged "Best of each Variety".  The mice with the top three scores in the Show are then titled  Grand Champion,  Champion  and  Reserve Champion.

During 2008 a new Class was introduced called the CONFORMATION Class.  This class is for mice who would normally be disqualified from showing because of a marking fault in their colouring or coat.  Many fanciers still keep these mice because of outstanding conformational qualities to breed from, but they cannot show them.  This class is to encourage the betterment of conformation.  The winners of this class are ineligible for the top awards.

There are also classes for mice who don't quite measure up to the standard but are nonetheless great pets and are judged only on temperament.  These classes are "Pet" and "Junior Pet" - owned by a child up to the age of 14 years.

This was our third Royal and was held on the first day of the Easter Show.  There was a steady flow of visitors throughout the day who enjoyed all the various displays and information provided.  We enjoyed a very successful day placing 12 mice from a total of 20 exhibited.
